COMBO – Course: From Movement to Sound + ESTA Italy Registration

The workshop offers a reflection on the role of body movement as a tool for deepening musical understanding and enriching the teaching practice of stringed instruments. Through accessible movement experiences, listening and discussion activities, and instrumental practice moments, participants will be guided to explore, through the body, fundamental aspects of musical language such as rhythm, phrasing, articulation, dynamics, and character, before transferring these experiences into instrumental practice.

Drawing on the principles of the Dalcroze methodology, the workshop will explore the potential of body-based learning in developing coordination, gestural freedom, and musical expressivity, with particular emphasis on the relationship between musical intention, bodily perception, and instrumental gesture.

The experiential dimension of the work will also offer the opportunity to experiment with creative methods of improvisation and to develop practical teaching exercises and strategies that can be applied to different contexts: from individual lessons to group teaching, with the possibility of adapting to students of different ages and levels of experience.

To the participants It is required to bring your own instrument. It is also invited to participate with a willingness to move, play, and experience music through the integration of listening, movement, and instrumental gesture.

Lecturer:

Diane Daly is a violinist, teacher, researcher, and innovator in the field of the pedagogy of string instruments. A member of the Irish Chamber Orchestra since 1997, she has developed an intense international career as a soloist, chamber musician, conductor, and improviser.

Qualified teacher of Euritmia Dalcroze and accredited specialist in Body-Mapping Applied to string instruments, he obtained a PhD at the University of Limerick, dedicated to the relationship between bodily practices, Dalcroze methodology, and instrumental performance. This research led to the creation of the method CESP – Creative Embodied String Performance, Today, it is being tested in international training and professional contexts.

His research work has been published in prestigious international journals of musical pedagogy and in 2022 he received the’Aloys Fleischmann Award for excellence in research based on artistic practice.

He has held the position of Director of the Master in Performing Archetwork at the University of Limerick and has devised numerous innovative projects in the educational and performing fields. Currently he is Head of the Archi Department at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM).
